Formula One is one of the most
complex and competitive sport of any ever played. One of the main
variables, tire choice, can change the result of any race!
Besides all the rules and regulations that accompany
the sport, tire choice is one of the most important parts of a race.
Bridgestone supplies tires to the FIA, who in turn distributes them
to the various teams. At each track the teams are given two different
tire compounds, both of which they have to use during the race.
Bridgestone offers a range of tires for the FIA, ranging from the
low grip, high endurance hard tires to the high grip, low endurance
soft tires. Each circuit has its own preference tire, which has
to be discovered by Brawn GP and the other teams. For an example,
the FIA offered the Super Soft and Medium Hard tires at the Australian
GP.

To illustrate the big effect of
tire choice, during Brawn GP's maiden race, the team chose the Medium
Hard tires for most of the race, which proved to be the correct
option, as those tires had a sustained pace. When the time finally
came to apply the super soft tires, Brawn GP had already pulled
enough of a lead to retain first and second positions.
The pressure of the tires plays as an important
role as the actual tire compound, because if the pressure is too
high there will be a bulge in the centreline of the tire, causing
less grip as a result of less road contact, if the pressure is too
low, the tire walls will overheat and also cause a loss of grip.
Brawn GP studied this effect thoroughly, and as with the previous
choice, they selected the perfect pressure for their tires resulting,
together with their advanced suspension, in perfect grip.

The even heating of tires is critical
to any team's results, as even heating means more grip and even
wear. The distribution of wear is determined by the cars overall
setup and how each driver drives. Brawn has mastered the art of
even tire wear by achieving excellence in design and driver training.
